What is osteopathy? One of the most fascinating things about osteopathy is its holistic approach to the body. “Viewing the body as a whole” is not what traditional medicine does. They have a specialist for practically every part of our body: feet, intestines, nerves, hormones, etcetera. Osteopathy however is about connecting these different systems and harmonizing them in order to make the body function as a whole. Independent of a medical prescription, the osteopath looks for the causes of a disorder. The cause - and - effect relationship is often not obvious at all: lower back pain can have its origin in the intestines and an indigestion can be linked to the central nervous system. Furthermore, osteopathy is a manual discipline. We feel with our hands the condition of different structures in the body: the circulatory system, muscles, bones, ligaments, nerves, lymphatic system, the craniosacral rhythm, etcetera. Additionally, we listen to the patient's story (the emotional and mental condition). The combination of all this information allows us to answer questions like: “Why is your body in pain?” “What systems might be causing the disorder?” “Which connections can be made here?” “Where can we find tension?” All this, in order to eventually come to the most important question: "How do we rebalance the body?".
What is the self-healing mechanism of the body? One of the main principles of osteopathy is: “The body is capable of self-regulation, self-healing, and health maintenance” (www.osteopathic.org). The key to consciously activate your self-healing properties is through breath and positive feelings.
